Discussing his return, the midfielder said: “My seven years at Manchester City were a time of pure contentment for me, both on and off the pitch.
“I grew as a person and a player, developed a special relationship with the City fans and enjoyed amazing success. It was an exceptional period in my life.
“To have the opportunity to return here means so much.
“Everyone knows the respect I have for Pep– he is the best manager in the world and working with him every day makes you a better player. You feel constantly challenged, which for any professional is exactly what you want. I cannot wait to work with him again.
“And what can I say about my teammates here at City… they are world class footballers. I am genuinely delighted to have the chance to train and play alongside them.
“Honestly, I cannot wait to wear the City shirt again.”
Gundogan has joined Man City in a free transfer from Barcelona just 14 months after initially leaving the Etihad.

In a statement addressed to Barcelona fans on social media, the Germany international wrote: “Dear culers, after just one year it’s already time to say goodbye.
“I came here to face a new, exciting challenge, and I was ready for it. I have given everything to fight for the team and the club the best possible way in a difficult season and I was looking forward to helping my teammates in the new campaign.
“Now I am leaving in a difficult situation, but if my departure can help the club financially, it makes me a bit less sad.
“Nevertheless, it’s been a time with incredible experiences and ups and downs – I always wanted to play at Barça, and I am very grateful for a memory and experience that I will remember for my life.
“I wish you the best for the season and for the future. The fans deserve to get this big club back to the world’s best. Visca el Barça!”
Before Gundogan’s return to Man City was officially confirmed, Paul Scholes urged Manchester United to sign him over Manuel Ugarte.
The Red Devils have been pushing to sign Ugarte from Paris Saint-Germain since the start of the transfer window, but his price tag has continued to be an issue.
Instead, United legend Scholes claimed Gundogan would be a perfect fit – and a fraction of the cost.
Gundogan won the treble with City in his last season at the club[/caption]Speaking on The Overlap alongside Jamie Carragher, he said: “Gundogan. I know it’s not going to happen but I think he’s the type of player Man United need.
“A Zubimendi… or I’m going to say Gundogan. A controlling midfield player just to take the sting out of play. Gundogan is perfect for that.”
He continued: “I have not seen too much of Ugarte, I saw him a couple of times last year.
“I’m not sure technically if he’s good enough. He seems to be a bit more of an Amrabat. Maybe a little bit better.”
Gundogan previously spent seven years with Man City and made 304 appearances.
He captained the side during the 2022-23 season and led City to a historic treble.
In total the midfielder won five Premier League titles, the Champions League, four League Cups and Two FA Cups during his time at the Etihad.
